Howling wolf and pine forest on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A howling wolf with detailed greyscale shading sits at the top of the design, with a pine tree above its head. Below, a triangular panel holds a small forest scene, framed by fine black linework that extends downwards. Pale blue geometric lines curve around the wolf and the triangle, and the rest of the piece is black and grey against a dark background.

Tuesday, and the wind has finally dropped enough to set the theodolite on the ridge above Glen Corrie. Ada says the wolves came down the north slope again last night. I heard them from the tent, one voice first, then the rest falling in behind like men joining a hymn they only half know. I did not sleep much after that.

We are meant to be measuring the boundary between the estate and the Forestry Commission plantation, which is a line on a map that nobody has walked since 1911. The old chain-man's book says the stone marker sits at the foot of a single pine, the only one left from the original planting. I found its stump this morning, grey and split, with a younger tree growing out of the heart of it as if the pine had decided to keep its own boundary.

Ada took the bearings while I drew the triangle in pencil, three sightings meeting at a point somewhere under the bracken. When we ran the lines through the blue survey tape, they closed on a spot exactly where the lower corrie den would have to be if the pack still used it. We did not dig. We left the marker where it was and wrote the coordinates on the back of a seed packet.

Before we packed up, the howl came again from the top of the ridge, and Ada lifted her hand to her mouth the way the old chain-men used to, to mark the time. We sent nothing back. The line is drawn. Tomorrow I will ink it properly, and the wolves can keep the rest.
