Geometric seahorse on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A faceted, geometric seahorse curls down the outer thigh, drawn in thin black lines filled with small triangular and polygonal sections. The ink is black only, with no shading or colour, and the seahorse sits diagonally across the skin with its tail curling at the lower end. The photo is taken from a close angle, with a grey t-shirt and long dark hair in the frame and a hand resting near the tattoo.

Ruth had cut the same seahorse eleven times before the twelfth would sit flat on the slate. Her father had drawn them freehand on the back of tide tables, curling and sure, but the pond at the bottom of the garden in Deal needed something that would hold still under the water, so she worked it out with a ruler and a pencil worn down to a stub. Every bend became a line, every line a meeting of two facets, until the creature looked less like a horse than a thing folded from a single sheet of tin.

The garden was narrow and she kept it that way. Sea holly grew through the gravel, and the neighbour's gull came every afternoon to inspect the water with an air of professional disapproval. Ruth ground the last edge of the twelfth tile with the flat stone, wiped her fingers on her apron, and carried it down to the pond. The water was cold enough to make her wrist ache.
She pressed the tile into the silt and watched it settle. For a moment the seahorse looked tilted, lost, a sum that had come out wrong. Then a ripple from the pump crossed the surface, the shadows of the facets shifted, and the little creature seemed to lift its head and turn toward the open sea at the end of the road.
Ruth went back up the path, leaving the gull to its opinions. She did not look at the pond again until supper, and when she did, the seahorse was still there, bright at the bottom where the light came through.
