Star and snake tattoos on bare legs

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A woman sits on a black leather sofa in a grey vest top, with her face mostly hidden by her hair. Three outlined stars in grey or blue sit on her thigh above the knee, and a traditional style snake with bold black outlines and red and green shading runs down her lower leg. Colour tattoos also cover her forearm and shoulder, and the soft natural light gives a relaxed indoor composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snake came up through the linen chute on the third night of the frost, and by then nobody on the night shift at St Aldric's was surprised by much. Dennis Oake found it coiled against the boiler pipes in the basement, green and red along its back, its black outline thick as a fishing line. He carried his torch down there every night to check the pressure gauges, and he had never once seen anything in that room that wasn't supposed to be there.

"What do you want, then?" he asked it, the way his mother had taught him to ask stray cats and bad weather. The snake lifted its head and looked past him at the stairwell, where a square of black window showed at the top. Dennis had heard the old porters' saying: a creature that climbs a hospital is owed a view of the sky, or it will climb until it finds one.

So he carried it up, slowly, one floor at a time, with Sister Ada Pryce walking ahead and holding the doors. On Ward Seven he lifted the sash of the window at the end of the corridor. Three stars stood over the car park, sharp and grey, the way they only look in the coldest weeks of the year. The snake raised itself onto the sill and stayed there a long while, its tail still curled in the corridor behind him.

When Dennis came back at six, the sill was empty except for a skin as thin as a glove, shining where the frost had settled on it. Ada said nothing about it. Neither of them swept it away.
