Eli had shipped out on the Marigold in March and the harbour had stopped saying his name at the Wednesday market. Tobias wanted to add a star the sky did not have, one that would sit at the point of the V where the lights ran out. Agnes told him the almanac was for the living, and that a made-up star would send a skiff onto the Scarrow rocks by mistake.

He drew it anyway, small as a seed, in the corner of the page where nobody reads the tide times. Agnes let him. When the printer's man came for the proofs on Friday, he held the sheet up to the lamp and frowned at the stray dot, then shrugged and pulled the plate.

In the spring a coxswain's wife bought a copy for her husband's boat. She wrote back that the extra light was the first thing she looked for on the dark crossing home.
