The thermometer in the hut at Glenmoor read minus eleven when Ada Penhallow first drew the flake on squared paper, and she had to breathe on her fingers between every stroke. Her brother Tom held the lamp steady and complained that she was taking an hour over one crystal that would be water by morning.

She had caught the thing on a slate tray dusted with black velvet, the way her father had taught her, and it sat there like a small machine that had decided to be beautiful. Every arm was built from leaves, each leaf folded into facets, each facet hatched so finely that under the lamp it looked less like frost than a stencil cut by a patient hand. A thin blue edge ran round the outermost points where the lamplight caught the ice. She counted six arms, then counted again, and found the seventh was only a shadow of the sixth.

Tom went to bed. Ada kept working until the tray grew cold enough to fog the glass, then she propped the drawing against the window and watched the sun come up behind the ridge. By the time the light reached the paper the frost had gone to nothing, and the only snowflake left in the valley was the one she had drawn, its lines pressed so hard into the card that she could feel every one of them with her thumb.
