Edelweiss flowers in a diamond frame on forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two open star-shaped flowers and a closed bud, with leaves, arranged diagonally inside a thin geometric diamond outline. The petals and centres are built from fine linework with stippled dotwork shading that gives them depth. The design is entirely black and grey and sits centrally on a forearm against a plain light background with a dark knitted sleeve at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every spring the goatherd's son, Tobias Reiner, climbed above the larches to the ledge where the star flowers grew, and every spring the wind took his cap before he reached it. The miller's daughter, Greta, had said she would have one flower or none at all. She said it without looking up from her sieve, so he took it for a dare.

In the third week of June he reached the ledge on his belly, with his knife between his teeth. The flowers grew from a crack in the grey slate, two open and one closed, arranged the way the old women arranged their chalk marks on the church door. He cut the two open ones and left the bud tucked into its crack, because his grandmother had told him a bud left behind would open for whoever came back for it. He wrapped the stems in a wet cloth and went down faster than was wise.

Greta took the cloth without a word and pressed the flowers between two slates. She set them on the sill, where the light came through the leaded glass in a diamond and lay across the table. For a month she did not speak to him at the well. Then, one morning in July, she was waiting at the foot of the path with her boots laced and a rope over her shoulder.

The bud had opened. It was pale as milk and turned its face to the sun, and when Tobias reached the ledge she was already there, sitting on the warm stone beside it. She did not touch the flower. She said only that she had counted, and that one was not enough for either of them. He laughed so hard that a loose stone rolled off the edge, and they both listened to it fall for a long time.
