Geometric stag head line design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A stag or deer head shown from the front, with long branching antlers rising above the frame. The head is built from angular facets and geometric panels, with fine, even black outlines and small interior details on the cheeks, ears and muzzle. The drawing is plain black linework on a white background, centred in the frame with no shading or colour.

Dear Ruth, the lift in Kestrel House has finally stopped for good, so I've been carrying the bin bags down all nineteen flights and counting the landings like you used to count sheep. The council man says the hoarding goes up on Monday, which means I have until then to clear the concierge cupboard, and that is where I found it.

It was tucked inside a lost property box, under a single glove and a Yellow Pages from 1997. A stag's head, drawn in plain black ink on squared paper. Every antler runs off the edge of the sheet, and the face is cut into facets like a piece of glass, with little panels on the cheeks and ears that look like they were drawn with a ruler and a great deal of patience. On the back, in neat capitals: MRS ADEYEMI, FLAT 14. FOR THE LOBBY. NOT FOR SALE.
I asked around. Her son lives in Leeds now and says she drew it the winter his father left, one line a night at the kitchen table, because she said curves were for people who weren't frightened. So I've been copying it onto the lobby wall above the post boxes, in white chalk, a bit at a time. The antlers are almost to the ceiling now. Tonight I'll do the last panel on the left ear and then go up the stairs one more time, just to check the lift doors open onto nothing, the way they always did.
Yours, Dennis
