Egyptian-style seated cat line drawing

Black and grey · Flash

A seated cat faces forward with an ornate headdress, almond-shaped eyes and a broad collar hanging with a pendant and tassels. The outline is a clean, even black line with decorative patterns inside the head and the collar, and the tail curls around the base on the left. The image is plain black on white with no shading or colour, and the figure fills the frame.

Dear Mo, the cat came off the van this morning wrapped in a bedsheet and I had to unwrap her on the grass before the rain started. You'll laugh, but she sat up on her own, perfectly straight, as if she'd been waiting for an audience. The man from the Wurlitzer people says she was carved for a fortune teller in Margate in 1911 and has been with the fair ever since, which I don't believe, though the brass pendant on her collar is cold to touch even in July.

The headdress is the odd thing. Someone has scratched a crescent moon above her forehead and a little spiral on each cheek, and when the lamps come on at dusk the lines catch the light like they're wet. Harold says it's just the lacquer. I've started leaving a saucer of milk beside her stool each night, and by morning it's gone and the ghost-ring it leaves on the boards is always the same size.

We pack up Sunday. If you come up to Kent before then, bring the good tape measure. I want to know how long her tail really is, because it curls round the base of the stand twice and I'm sure it was shorter when we arrived. Don't tell Harold. He'll only say I'm getting soft about the cat, and he may be right. Yours, Ruth
