The bus from Ma'an left Maya at the last petrol station with the engine ticking like a clock that had lost its nerve. She stepped down with a canvas bag, a folded map and her grandmother's silver compass, and watched the driver wave at nothing before he pulled away into the heat shimmer. The road ahead ran straight to a line of hills the colour of old bread. Nobody had told her the hitchhikers here were goats.

A lorry stopped for her near noon. The driver, a broad man named Essa who smelled of cardamom and diesel, said nothing about the sky until it had gone the colour of a bruise over the western ridge. Then he pointed at the triangle of pale light that had opened above the road, an eye-shaped hole in the cloud with the sun sitting exactly at its centre. He said his mother called it the hand that holds the watching, and that you didn't look back at it while you drove.

Maya looked. She could not help it. The light split into thin silver threads, and the threads hung down over the road like beads on a broken necklace, each one dropping a little diamond of shadow onto the tarmac. Two pale crescents of cloud curled up at the edges of the sky, as if someone had drawn a moon on either side of a palm. The lorry slowed, then stopped, and Essa turned the key off and sat with both hands on the wheel.

When the cloud closed again, the compass in her lap was pointing back the way they had come. She did not argue with it. She took out a pen, drew a small eye on the back of her map beside the road, and asked Essa, very politely, to turn around.
