Geometric sun and lines on a lower leg
Geometric · Other · Mixed · Photo
A solid black circle sits at the centre of an orange ring, surrounded by black radiating tick marks and a faint grey sketched outline on the left. Thin black straight lines run up from the design towards the knee, giving a precise, diagram-like feel. The palette is limited to black, grey and orange against a plain yellow background, with another patterned tattoo partly visible at the left edge.

The almanac said the sun would go dark at twenty past eleven, and my father, who had never once been wrong about a tide, pinned the page to the wheelhouse wall with two brass drawing pins and told me to stop fidgeting with the throttle.

We were moored below the lock at Teddington with the engine off, the Mabel knocking gently against her fenders. He had ruled his lines on squared paper the night before, a fan of straight strokes running from the mast down to a dot he'd marked as the lock gate, and along the margin he had drawn ticks, one for every degree of the sky. He said a good chart was just patience written down. I thought it looked like a sun with too many spokes.
At eleven the light began to thin. The river went from green to pewter, and then the rooks in the poplars stopped arguing all at once. The sun shrank to a hairline, then a bright ring with a black coin sitting dead centre of it, exactly as he had drawn it in orange ink and pencil. My father's hand stopped moving over the page. He didn't look up. He just said, quietly, 'There. You see, it does what it says.'
When the light came back, it came back slowly, the way it does after a fever. I took the drawing down from the wall and folded it into my coat. Years later I still have it, the rays fanned out across the paper, and whenever I hold it up to a window the thin lines seem to point at whatever I am about to do next.
