Mandala and petal forearm tattoo
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A circular mandala of concentric rings and radiating patterns sits on the forearm, shaded in black and filled with red and coral. Fine black linework forms overlapping arcs, petal shapes and a long vertical stem that runs down the arm. The photograph is taken indoors against a pale wall, with the arm angled diagonally across the frame.

She had been making the same piece for forty years and never finished it. Each winter a new stem went down the edge, a petal dropped away from the sprig, and each spring she unpicked the lot because the arcs had drifted off true. "A pattern is only honest when it is wrong in exactly one place," she said, and I never learnt whether she meant the lace or herself.
The summer I was sixteen the fever took the lambs, then took most of her sight, and she gave me the cushion with the half-made sun on it. I worked by feel that first night, and when my fingers found the rings closing I knew I had slipped at the seventh turn. I could unpick a month of work or leave the flaw and call it the lace's own mind.
I left it. In the morning she asked me to read her the stitches, and I heard myself say, "There's a mistake at the seventh ring." She laughed until she coughed. "Good girl. Now you can start the next one."
