Geometric terrarium with succulents and pebbles
Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A faceted glass terrarium outlined in clean black linework holds succulent rosettes, trailing leafy stems and a few pebbles on a sandy base. The glass panes are drawn with solid lines, while the plants use fine outlines with some stippled shading on the soil and stones. The design is shown in black and grey and fills the frame on a smooth area of skin.

Dear Nell, the glass case came through Sowerby lock with one chipped corner and not a single leaf out of place, which is more than I can say for the cabin kettle. I've set it on the table under the window where the stove throws enough heat to keep the succulents happy, though Dad keeps moving it to make room for the tea caddy.

You'll remember the stall in Selby where we bought it. The man wanted four quid and I talked him down to three, and he threw in a bag of grey pebbles for nothing because he said they came off the bank at Thorne and nobody else would want them. We laid them in the bottom with a thin layer of sand from the same bank, and the trailing stems went in last, the ones with little oval leaves that look like someone has threaded beads along a wire. They've grown sideways towards the glass, reaching for the sun that falls across the cabin in the afternoons, so I turn the case every morning to stop them leaning too far.
Yesterday the fattest rosette, the one that looks like a closed lotus, opened a single pale ring at its heart. Dad said it was the damp. I said it was the boat, that we have moved every day for a month and the plant has decided to stop travelling and settle. So I asked him to tie us up at Ferry Lane until it finishes, and he agreed without a word of argument, which is how I know he is pleased too. Come up in June. Bring your good scissors and we'll see what else has decided to stay.
