Wolf and campsite in a circular dotwork design

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A circular design shows a wolf's head and shoulder at the upper right, set against a dotted night sky with stars. Below it, a tent sits beside a lake framed by pine trees, with mountains behind, and the lower edge is filled with flowers and leaves. The work uses fine stippled dots for shading and bold black linework, all in black ink and grey tones on a rounded thigh.

Kerry Mabbott had the last run of the night on the number 9, which left the depot on Cross Green and climbed past the reservoirs where the streetlamps gave up. After half three nobody boarded. The heater ticked under the dash and she kept the radio off, because the quiet suited the road and the road suited her.

At the terminus loop she sat with the engine idling and looked past the chain-link fence into the dark of the woods. Her grandfather had kept a tent folded in the boot of his Cortina, and when she was nine he drove her out to a lake where the pines came right down to the water. He pointed at a pawprint in the mud and told her a wolf had passed that morning. She believed him until his brother said it was a fox, and her grandfather laughed so hard he had to sit on a tree stump.

A shape moved at the edge of the headlamps, low and patient, its eyes catching the light. She opened the doors and waited. It was only a lurcher with a torn ear, sitting where the grass met the tarmac as if it had been expecting a bus. It did not come aboard. She sat with it for a long minute, the way you sit with someone who has decided to keep their own counsel.

At twenty to five she pulled away and checked the mirror. The dog was still there, a grey mark against the verge. Above the reservoir the sky had thinned enough to show a few stars, scattered and sharp, and she found herself counting them all the way down the hill.
