Geometric bird over stacked triangles on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bird with outstretched wings sits above a column of nested triangles, circles and dotted construction lines that narrow to a small arrow at the bottom. The linework is fine and precise, with the wings and circles built from thin overlapping strokes and light stippling. The design is rendered in black ink and greys against pale skin, and the composition is centred and vertical along the forearm.

Teodor had been told the pass could not be surveyed in a single season, and he had been stubborn enough to try it anyway. By the third week the theodolite stood on its tripod in the wind like a heron that had given up on fish, and the squared paper curled at the corners no matter how many stones he weighted it with. Each morning he hung the plumb line from the cairn and watched the lead bob settle to its point, wrote the figure in pencil, then wrote it again to be sure.

The bird came on the fourth day. It might have been a buzzard or a lammergeier, too far off to name, and it hung above the col with its wings spread so evenly that he stopped measuring to watch. Every few minutes it tilted and slid down the air, following some line only it could see toward the valley, and he found himself sketching its path in the margin of the field book: a sweep, then a circle, then a long diagonal that narrowed to a single point over the far slope.
When he laid the sketch beside his survey, the lines agreed with each other. The triangles he had drawn to fix the peaks sat neatly above the arc the bird had flown, and the small circle of the tarn nested inside them all. He had been treating the bird as a distraction, but it had been tracing the same geometry he was trying to pin to the ground.
On the last morning he drove the final stake where the lines converged and tied a strip of red cloth to it. The bird came back, circled once over the stake, and went on down the valley without him. Teodor packed the instrument, folded the map, and left the stake standing, certain that whoever came after would find the bird's line before they found the road.
