Geometric triangles and arrows in a circle
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a circle filled with overlapping triangles, with arrow shapes and a few loose triangles extending beyond the outline. The linework is bold and sketchy, with solid black fills and grey shading that give the triangles depth. The ink is black and grey, and the design fills most of the frame against a light background.

By October the Harrow and Vance Travelling Circus had shrunk to four acts, one temperamental generator and a big top with a hole the size of a cart over the centre ring. Lazlo still set up the wheel every night before the clowns came on. It was a circle of painted plywood twelve feet across, studded with iron arrows, and the triangles he had sketched across it in charcoal were the one thing in the outfit he never let anyone repaint.

I was the one who stood against it. Dora threw, I held my arms out with my back to the board, and the crowd counted the arrows as they sank in beside my ears. Lazlo said the design was a compass, so a lost child could always find north even with the lights gone. He had first drawn it on the back of a ticket stub the winter his wife left, triangles folding into triangles until the page was nearly black. 'Keep them sharp,' he told me, 'and keep them pointing out.'
On the last night eleven people came, and the generator coughed twice during the knife act. Dora's throw went wide, and one arrow skated off the rim and stuck in the sawdust past the ring. Nobody clapped. Lazlo stood up in the dark and said, quite calmly, that we would head south at dawn, because south was the only direction none of us had tried in a while.
At first light I unbolted the wheel by myself and laid it flat in the back of the lorry. Its loose triangles, the ones that always looked as if they were trying to leave, lined up with the road ahead. I drove with the board rattling behind me, and at every fork I glanced back at the arrows, which had never once pointed at the tent.
