Nobody on Scatterby Pier had seen the shark come up the slipway, but by the time the gulls were fighting over the fish boxes he was already sitting on the rail, board tucked under one fin, watching the tide go out with the air of a man who owed it money.

His name was Dennis, or that was what the chip shop man called him, because he had once ordered a portion of cod and eaten the vinegar bottle instead. He had no interest in the sea. What he liked was the long concrete ramp down by the old lifeboat house, where someone had painted a crooked A inside a circle on the wall and nobody had ever painted over it. Each morning he rolled down that slope with his jaw open and the palm trees in the arcade planters bowing as he passed, and each morning he came back up with a fresh scrape on his nose and a hard look for anyone who laughed.

The trouble came in August, when a developer in a blue jacket arrived with a clipboard and said the ramp would be filled in for flats. Dennis said nothing. He simply went down the slope one last time, faster than anyone had seen him move, and kept going, off the end, over the shingle and out past the breakwater, his board spinning in the air behind him like a tossed coin.

Some say he is still out there, skating the swell with his mouth wide open. The lifeboat men say the palms on the wall grow faster than they should, and that on flat calm mornings a chalk circle turns up on the new hoardings with a single line drawn through it, hard and quick.
