Geometric unicorn with watercolour splashes on forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A unicorn head is drawn in angular, faceted geometric linework, with a pale fill and a pink and red section on the cheek and jaw. Soft watercolour splashes in blue, lilac and pink surround the head and spread outwards across the skin. The tattoo sits on the inner forearm against a plain grey background and a blue knitted sleeve.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The paper came from last year's seed catalogue, so the first fold landed on a picture of a runner bean, and Dad said that was a poor omen for a unicorn. I told him unicorns did not care about beans. I was sitting on the orchard wall with my knees up, the sun going low behind the Bramley trees, and the tin of cracked watercolours from the church fête open on the stone beside me.

I folded the head first, because the head is where the stories go. Valley folds for the jaw, a mountain fold for the brow, and a long point for the horn, sharp enough to prick my thumb. When I dipped the brush the blue ran straight off the bristles and into the paper, so I let it bleed where it liked. Pink went on the cheek and jaw where the light caught it. Lilac was for the splashes I flicked at the wasps, who were drunk on windfalls and took no notice of me at all.

The wind came up off the far field and lifted the unicorn clean over the wall. I watched it skim the long grass between the trees like something with somewhere important to be. At the foot of Grandad's old ladder, propped against the Discovery, lay a windfall with one bite out of it, and beside that the paper was already soaking into the dew, its colours running.

I didn't go after it. I climbed down, picked up the bitten apple, and went in for tea. Next morning the wall was still damp, and the unicorn had drifted into the nettles, its blue and pink spread wider than I had left them, as if the paint had decided to finish the job without me.
