Fine line botanical sprigs on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two slender branches with small round flowers and pointed leaves, arranged in a loose diagonal spray. The linework is very thin and delicate, with minimal shading and the leaves drawn in solid black. Most of the design is black ink, with a few small pink dots on the flower buds, set against plain skin beside a white top and dark jeans.

The wasps had found the windfalls before we did, so Dad told me to take the wheelbarrow along the far rows and leave the bruised ones for them. Mum was at the kitchen table with the ledger, adding up what the Bramleys would fetch at the market in Ledbury, and every few minutes she called out a number I didn't follow.

Under the damson at the end of row seven I found Aunt Rhian's secateurs, rusted at the hinge, lying in the grass where she'd dropped them the autumn before she moved to Cardiff. I cleaned them on my jumper and cut a sprig from the young shoot that had come up beside the old stump. It had three little round flowers gone to seed, pale pink at the tips of the buds, and leaves with points like arrowheads. I put it in my coat pocket, meaning to show her on the phone.

Aunt Rhian didn't answer that evening, or the next. When she finally rang back she asked what I'd been doing in the orchard, and I told her about the wasps and the ledger and the sprig. She was quiet for so long I thought the line had dropped. Then she said the stump was the one her mother planted, and that the first crop had been so sour they fed it to the pigs.

I pressed the sprig flat inside Dad's old almanac and wrote the date on the inside cover. Next summer I'll ask her to bring the secateurs back to the orchard, and we'll see whether the shoot still knows the way.
