Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A tattoo of two faces in profile, built from thin, looping strokes that overlap and meet near the centre of the design. The linework is black ink with no shading, and the lines vary slightly in weight and length. The design sits on the outer thigh against pale skin, with a light grey denim hem at the top right of the frame.

The sea had taken the bottom step of the boarding house years ago, so Mrs Halloran's guests learned to skip it on the way down to breakfast. On the Saturday the wind dropped and the window of the back parlour filled with a flat, pale light. Iris found him there with a pencil and the back of a rent receipt, drawing the view of the harbour wall over and over without lifting the point. He had never once lifted it, she realised, watching. Every line ran into the next, looping back on itself where a boat or a gull or a thought had pulled him aside.

"You can't take the pencil off the paper," she said, "or it isn't a drawing, it's a lie."

He turned the receipt towards her. In the middle of the loops was a profile, and beside it another, and the two noses almost touched where the lines knotted together. "It's you and me," he said, "if we'd stayed in one place long enough to be drawn."

She laughed, and the sound surprised her. Outside, Mrs Halloran was shaking a rug over the rail, and far below the bottom step waited under the tide, exactly where it had always been.
