Geometric wolf line drawing
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A geometric animal head in profile, probably a wolf or fox, is drawn in black lines formed from interlocking triangles. Thin, even linework with no shading creates the faceted outline, and the figure is set on plain white paper. Small dots and short marks with unidentified script-like characters sit around the head and body.

Hester had the theodolite set up on the chalk ridge before the mist lifted, and by nine she had three stations fixed and a fourth waiting for her to find it. The village below had a name the Ordnance men had given it wrong, and a church that stood exactly on the line they had drawn for it. She wrote the bearings in pencil, then in ink, because her father had told her that pencil was for people who expected to be wrong.

On the fourth morning the wolf came down the valley, or at least its tracks did, pressed into the wet grass in a line of sharp triangles. She had seen dog prints and fox prints and the scuffed heels of the lamb-boys running, but these were edged like cut paper, each one angled so that her neck ached to follow them. She drew them in her field book as they went, and when she looked up from the page the animal was sitting at the edge of her tripod's shadow, watching her with its head turned to one side, as if it were reading her figures upside down.
She sent the sheet back to the county office with the fourth station marked 'animal, unknown', and a row of marks beneath it that she had copied from the frost on the animal's flank, where the cold had lifted the grass into small crooked letters. Nobody at the office could read them. Three weeks later a letter came asking her to explain the gap in the survey, and by then the village had moved its church a field to the east, quietly, one stone at a time, so that every line fell exactly where it was meant to.
