Twin wolf heads with geometric linework

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

Two wolf heads face each other in a symmetrical composition, with the muzzles and ears drawn in dense hatching and stippling. Fine dashed and solid lines form a layered geometric diamond and wireframe shape behind and between them. The drawing is in black ink on a cream background with no colour.

You find Priya by the trophy cabinet, the one where the hockey cups have gone dull and the hexagonal school crest still hangs crooked. She holds a plastic cup of warm white wine and wears the same stubborn expression she wore when Mr Haskell asked for homework. "You still owe me a set square," she says, and you realise she has been rehearsing that line for twenty-six years.

The geometry room smelled of chalk and radiator dust back then. The two of you were kept behind one lunchtime for talking through a lesson, and instead of apologising you drew on the back of a Year Nine exercise book. Two wolves, because the school mascot was a wolf nobody liked, and you wanted something fiercer. You faced them toward each other and built a diamond between their muzzles with a borrowed compass, a rule that was never supposed to close. Every line had to be ruled by one of you while the other looked away, so neither of you ever knew quite where the edges would fall.

Priya opens her bag and slides the book across the table between the vol-au-vents. The paper has gone soft as cloth, but the dashed lines still run true, and the eyes on both wolves are finished in two different hands. She taps the diamond. "It only ever shuts when both of us are in the room," she says, and for a second the music from the DJ booth sounds like a bell going for the end of lunch.

You pick up a pencil from the cup by the register. The gap is still there, one short line at the base of the lower point, exactly where you both stopped. You draw it slowly while she watches, and the shape closes as neatly as it did in 1998.
