Geometric wolf on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf in mid-stride is drawn in thin black outline, with its body, legs and head formed from overlapping circles and straight construction-style lines. The linework is fine and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The wolf sits centrally across the arm against a plain pale skin background, with a dark surface behind.

Third week out and the chart is the only thing aboard that still agrees with itself. You sit at the mapping table in the lee of the binnacle, dividers in your fist, walking a circle across the paper the way Mr Harrow taught you: one leg pinned to the pencil mark, the other swinging round until it meets its own tail. Four circles, each spaced by a day's run. The swell keeps shoving the sheet towards the rail, and you keep pulling it back with your elbow.

Harrow watches from his hammock, which is never a good sign. 'You're drawing a dog,' he says. 'It's a wolf, sir. Look at the legs.' You built it from circles because the sea is made of them, the swell rolling under the hull in long rings, and because a wolf in mid-stride is only a set of overlapping arcs if you refuse to let it be anything else. He grunts that the old whalers called a run of foul weather a wolf walking, and that it was never the other way round. You let him have the last word and think about the straight lines running through its legs.

The fog comes on the fourth night and takes the stars, then the lamp on the bow, then the compass card, which swims in its bowl as if it has lost interest in north. Harrow is ill below. The captain looks to you. So you lay the sheet flat under the lantern, lay your ruler from the wolf's shoulder to its forefeet, and find that the lines you drew for pleasure cross the coast you have been steering for. Two of them meet exactly on the headland.

At dawn the fog lifts in a single breath and there it is, grey and close, precisely where the wolf was walking. You fold the chart along its creases and put it inside your coat. Years later you will still see the animal's shape in the wake, the circles breaking apart behind the stern as the ship turns for home, and you will know which way it was going.
