Geometric unicorn on the ankle
Geometric · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small rearing unicorn is built from straight, faceted black lines, with its horn, mane and legs drawn as connected angles. The design is outlined in solid black ink with no shading, and it sits on a pale lower leg above the foot against a dark background. The composition is centred on the tattoo, which is the only subject in the frame.

The function room of the Shay Hotel smelled of carpet shampoo and warm sausage rolls, and nobody there had the decency to age in a way I recognised. I found Marian Holt by the raffle table, still holding a biro she had clearly brought from home. She asked if I had kept the worksheet. I said I didn't know what she meant, which was a lie, because it had lived folded inside my copy of Jane Eyre for thirty-one years.

Mr Pryce had set us angles that Friday in Year Nine: draw a shape with no curves in it. Marian ignored the shape and drew a horse rearing on its back legs, every joint a point, every mane a zigzag of small sharp hinges. She told me a curve was just a lie told in tiny steps, and she wasn't going to tell one. Pryce caught her with it and kept the paper. She got it back a week later with a red tick and the words "Not geometry" in the margin, which she said was the only honest comment anyone had ever made about her.
She laughed when I told her I still had it, then stopped laughing when I unfolded it on the trestle table between the Jaffa cakes and the tombola. The creases had gone soft and grey. She looked at the horse for a long time, the way you look at a photograph of a house you once lived in.
Then she took the biro and drew one straight line from the horn to the edge of the paper, and stopped it just short of the margin. "It was never finished," she said. "That was the point. Now it can leave."
