Geometric wolf made of circles on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf in mid-stride, facing right, is outlined in fine black linework and built from overlapping circles and straight construction lines. The wolf's body and legs are formed by these geometric shapes, with small dots at the joints and intersections. The tattoo is entirely black ink on pale skin, against a dark background, and fills most of the frame.

Mr Ashby has finally let me hold the beam compass, though he watches my hands the way a hen watches a fox. Yesterday I drew the wolf he wanted for the boundary plate at Thorncliffe, and he tore it up because the circles sat wrong against the hill. He says a beast has to be built from what it cannot escape, which is geometry, not fur.

So on Sunday I went up with the theodolite and a flask, and I found it on the ridge. Not a wolf, of course. The wind had cut a line through the bracken, and the sheep had worn pale tracks that crossed at the same points every time, one circle for each of the old stone cairns. I sat on a rock and laid tracing paper over everything until the wolf stood up out of the paper, four long strides, head lifted towards the reservoir.

When I brought it down, Mr Ashby said nothing for a full minute. Then he pinned it to the drawing board, fetched a pencil, and marked a small dot wherever two circles met. "Those are the places it can be stopped," he said, and handed the pencil back to me. I have spent all week walking up to check those dots.

Last night I climbed the ridge in the dark with only a lantern, and every cairn stood exactly where the wolf had placed its feet. I am writing this on the back of the survey so you will know I did not imagine it.
