Giraffe tattoo on the side ribs
Ribs · Colour · Photo
A giraffe with a long neck and small ears is drawn in thin outline, with its body filled by a pattern of pale orange, yellow and pink patches. Teal shading runs along the neck and tail, which curls away at the bottom edge of the frame. The design sits diagonally on bare skin of the side torso, with a hand and a waistband visible at the edges.

In Gallow Seam, the mining village above the colliery, folk said the giraffe came up out of the old workings the winter the roof fell in. Nobody in the valley had ever seen a giraffe. The schoolmaster drew one on the blackboard for the children, and the children laughed at its neck, which was longer than the headframe. Still, the story went round the pit cottages that it walked on the tip road after dark, its patches the colours of rust and dawn.

When the cage jammed two hundred yards down, with Ada Mellor's father and eleven others below, the beast came out of the mist along that road. It did not hurry. It lowered its long neck over the mouth of the shaft, slow as a rope let out, and the men below climbed it hand over hand, the way a child climbs a tree. Ada counted them as they came up into the frost. Twelve. Her father was last, and he swore the neck was warm.
The owners nailed a notice to the gate declaring the animal trespass and offering a reward. The notice was gone by morning, and the reward was never claimed. Ada took it a dish of turnips every Sunday, and it ate from her palm with its tail curled round its own feet.
The tail still drips teal when it rains, the way the dye vats at the mill used to run in the wet. Nobody in Gallow Seam has ever thought to wipe it dry.
