Cat sitting on a crescent moon on the lower back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a cat sitting on a crescent moon, shown in a single thin outline with minimal shading. The ink is dark against warm skin, and the cat's ears and tail curl neatly within the curve of the moon. The photo is taken close up from behind, with the top of the head and a denim waistband visible around the tattoo.

The oven door was already warm under my palm when Mrs Okonedo's tabby came over the yard wall, which meant it was twenty to five and the moon was still hanging over the bins like a paring knife someone had forgotten to wash. I had three trays of tin loaves to get out before the milk van, and a cat who considered herself the first customer of the day.

Her name was Pilot, because she sat on the crate outside the back door as if she were steering the whole street. Every morning she took the heel of yesterday's bloomer and ignored the butter I left beside it. Tonight she didn't come down. She sat on the top of the wall with her tail wrapped round her feet, still as a figure cut from tin, and looked up at the thin curve of the moon as though she had been asked to hold it there.
I thought about calling her down, then didn't. My father used to say the moon was only lent to us for the hour before the baking starts, and he would make me stop and watch it go pale. So I stood with the peel in my hand and watched it go pale. The sky over the car park turned the colour of weak tea, the cat stretched, yawned, and dropped onto the cobbles.
She walked straight past the bread and sat by the open oven door, where the light was. I slid the first loaf onto the board and tapped its base, and it sounded hollow, which means it was done. Pilot blinked at me, once, slowly, and I took that as permission to start the day.
