Henna-style ornamental design on lower back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
An intricate ornamental design covers the lower back, centred on a tall paisley shape with a vertical line of small stars running up to a larger star at the top. Fine swirls, scrolls and dotted detail fill the wavy bands that sweep out to either side, following the curve of the body. The design is a single dark brown tone on pale skin against a pink background, and it may be henna rather than ink.

Dear Amina,

The monsoon caught us three days past Socotra and the sailmaker says we will not see land until the wind decides otherwise. I have been counting the nights by the stars Uncle Yusuf showed me on the way out, the ones he calls the lamp-hangers, though the Portuguese charts give them other names. When the sky is clear I climb to the foredeck with my slate and copy them before the lookout bells start.
Yesterday I found the old pattern again in the bottom of my trunk, the one you traced for me on the back of a receipt before I left. You will remember the paisley, the teardrop with its curled tail, and how you laughed when I said it looked like the bulb of a lantern. I have been drawing it on my own forearm with the ink Mr Doshi gave me in Muscat, because there is nothing else to do with my hands at the rail except wring them. The scrolls keep running away from me. I make them tight and then they open like fern fronds.
The captain says the stars do not move, only we do. I think he is wrong about the stars but right about us. Every morning the figurehead is a little further east, and the lines of the pattern slide sideways as the ship heaves. I have stopped trying to make them straight.
When we make Surat I will bring you the slate. Tell Father the lamp-hanger at the top of the pattern is the one that points home, and that I did not forget which way to look.
