Black and grey · Flash

A cartoon giraffe head in black ink wears a small hat with a tassel and has a curled, smiling mouth. Its long neck is made of five-line musical staves with notes, sharps and flourishes that trail off to the side. The drawing is in fine black linework with no shading, set against a plain beige background.

The giraffe turned up at Thursday practice in its good hat, the one with the tassel, and asked politely for the alto part. Nobody at St Aldhelm's had ever seen a giraffe that could read. Mrs Hollis, who kept two biros tucked behind her ears, looked it up and down over her spectacles and said the altos were full.

It did not leave. For three weeks it stood by the tea urn with its neck folded under the hall rafters like a bent drainpipe, listening. Each night it walked home across the allotments, and each morning it came back with fresh music written up its neck, quavers and crotchets trailing off the staves, the sharps tucked in where the sound could climb. On the third Thursday Mrs Hollis admitted that the notes sat better up there than on any paper she owned.

On harvest Sunday the organ wheezed to a stop halfway through the second verse. The nave went quiet enough to hear the bell rope creak. Then, from the back pew, a low hum rose up the long neck, note by note, until the whole congregation had found the tune they had sung since they were children, the one nobody had ever bothered to write down, and the hymn carried on under the beams.

Afterwards Mrs Hollis took the biros from behind her ears and set them on the font. The giraffe tipped its hat to her, tassel swinging, and went off across the allotments to find a longer stave.
