Treble clef with heart and peace sign sketch
Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn pencil sketch of a treble clef with a heart at its centre, and a peace sign formed within the heart. The clef has a shaded, ribbon-like body and curled ends, with soft grey shading on one side. The design is centred on a plain white background with no body part visible.

The fair had packed up at Hollins Green by the time Dilys came back for her pencil, so I was still on the caravan steps with the lamp lit when she knocked. She wanted the clef drawn properly, the one painted in gold on the side of the steam organ, before the lorries took it to Carlisle. I told her the gold had flaked off years ago. She said she knew exactly what it looked like, she had been staring at it since she was six.

So we sat on the step with a sheet of cartridge paper between us, and I drew the long ribbon of the thing first, shading one side with the flat of the lead so it looked like it was turning in air. Dilys wanted the curls at the bottom to spiral tight, like the end of a fiddle scroll, and a heart in the belly of the clef where the two lines crossed. I put the heart in. Then she made me draw a peace sign inside it, two straight lines splitting the heart into quarters, because her brother Owen had painted that on the organ's front board the summer before he went to sea, and nobody had ever had the nerve to scrub it off.
When it was finished she held the drawing up to the lamp, and the shading looked like weather moving over the wheel. She folded it twice and put it in her coat without a word. The organ is in Carlisle now, I expect, with Owen's board still on its front. I kept the pencil. Every time I sharpen it I lose a little more of that first long curve, and I find I don't mind.
