Treble clef with flute and music notes
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a large solid treble clef with a flute running up its left side, surrounded by curving staff lines and several music notes. The clef and note heads are filled in solid black, while the flute keys and staff lines are drawn in fine outline. The subject is centred on a plain cream background, with the design filling most of the frame.

By the third week of the gale you have stopped counting the hours the lamp has burned and started counting the bars of the tune you cannot get out of your head. Mr Pell, who kept the light before you, left a silver flute in a biscuit tin under the cot, and you have taken to playing it from the gallery rail when the fog thickens enough to swallow the foghorn's bellow.

His logbook is full of notes of his own: wind backed south-west, visibility nil, a trawler's lights seen and lost. In the margins, in neat copperplate, he wrote out little runs of notes the way another man might doodle. You learn them by ear first, then by eye, as the staff lines bend down the page like swell on a long beach. The great curling sign at the head of each line, the one he called the old key, tells you where the tune begins and which way to climb.
On the ninth night a light answers from the east. You play the phrase back across the water, the three rising notes, and for a long minute nothing comes but the sea. Then, faint and a little flat, the same three notes drift back out of the murk from a boat you cannot see.
In the morning the fog lifts and a fishing coble lies off the skerry, its crew waving their caps. You open the logbook and write the bars you played beside Pell's neat notes, and beneath them, in pencil, the answer.
