Girl Almighty lettering on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo reads GIRL ALMIGHTY in two stacked lines of small, plain black capitals set on the inner upper arm. The strokes are thin and even, with a simple, slightly hand-drawn sans serif letterform and no shading. The skin is light and the photo is taken in daylight against a dark top and a pale wall, with the lettering sitting near the centre of the frame.

The miller's youngest daughter, Hild, was the only one in Corrow who would climb the broken stair of Skelder Castle to fetch the goats that had strayed through the gatehouse. The men said the place was cursed and the women said it was unsafe, and both were right about the stair, which had lost three steps in the great frost and hung over nothing at the turn.

One autumn the lord's steward rode up from the valley with a writ and a box of iron nails. He meant to pull the castle down for its stone before the snow. Nobody in the village argued, because nobody argued with the steward. Hild only asked him how long it would take. He laughed and said a fortnight with ten men. She said then he had better hire eleven, since she meant to sit on the highest wall until he left.
He hired none. The first man who set a ladder to the north wall came down with his hair full of bats and would not say what he had seen, and the others found reasons to be busy elsewhere. The steward rode off swearing. Hild stayed up in the ruin through the winter with a sack of oats and a flint, and in spring the village found the goats asleep in the chapel and the girl asleep among them, one hand flat on the cold stone as if she were holding the walls up by pressing.
The steward came back the next year with his nails and found the north wall still standing and two lines cut into the lintel above the gate, in plain square capitals: GIRL on the top, ALMIGHTY beneath. He asked who had done it. The miller's wife said the castle had. Hild, who was carrying a goat down the stair, said nothing at all, which in Corrow was the same as agreeing.
