Girl with apples in a wooded scene on the back

Dotwork · Back · Mixed · Photo

A girl with short dark hair sits in a basket on a cloth, surrounded by scattered red apples, with large trees framing the scene and small birds in the sky. The linework is built from stippled dots and fine hatching, giving the trees and ground soft grey tonal shading. Small areas of red ink on the apples are the only colour in an otherwise grey composition, which fills most of the upper back.

The wood at the edge of Harrow Lea was old enough that its trees leaned over the path like neighbours gossiping across a fence. Crows sat in the high branches and lifted in pairs when she passed, and she suspected they were taking notes. Beside a stone wall that ran nowhere, a man in a grey coat was sorting apples into two heaps, one for keeping and one for giving away, and he did not look up when she stopped.

Which pile is for me? she asked. He said the orchard had always been split, half for the village and half for whoever came asking the way home, and the second heap was hers if she wanted it. She said she already had a basket. He said that was the trouble with baskets: they only ever held what you thought to put in them.

She went home by the long way with the basket on her hip and one apple in it, and for once the trees let her out at the stile without a rustle. Her mother counted the fruit on the cloth that night and found one more than she had left, and said nothing. In the morning the stone wall was gone, and the path ran straight through to the village as if it had never bent at all.
