Skull with pipe and smoke on a thigh

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large skull with a smoking pipe rests across the top of the design, with grey smoke curling up and to the left. The linework is loose and sketchy, with black shading in the eye sockets and nasal area and open hatching across the cranium. Orange wash fills much of the skull, and the composition sits centrally on the upper leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mae Dorrigan had counted the cloakroom tickets three times before the band struck up the last waltz, and each time they came up one short. Fourteen coats, thirteen tickets. The Marine Palais smelt of wet wool, Brylcreem and the sweet, burnt tobacco that Mr Halloran smoked in the gallery where he thought nobody could see him.

The man in the gallery wore no hat that she could make out, and his face never settled long enough to be recognised. Each time she looked up, a grey plume rose from a briar pipe and drifted left, away from the chandelier, as if it wanted the open window. The trombonist played through a chorus that went sour under the rafters, and nobody on the floor so much as glanced upward.

At eleven, when the lights came up, she climbed the stairs with the spare stub in her fist. The gallery was empty except for the pipe resting on the rail, still warm, and a scatter of orange ash glowing in the draught like a dropped ember. Downstairs the coats hung where they always hung, but one grey coat with a torn cuff sat a little apart from the rest, dripping onto the boards.

She lifted it into the light from the street. The stub was pinned inside the lining, and the name on it was her own, dated 1931, with a line beneath in a careful, slanting hand: Keep the number, Mae. I'll collect the rest in the spring.
