Skull with green leaves on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A realistic skull is shown in soft grey and black shading, with its eye sockets and teeth picked out in dark tones. Green leaves with detailed veins frame the top and bottom of the skull, and three glossy water droplets sit on its forehead. The design fills the frame against smooth skin, with the darkest shading around the edges fading into the surrounding flesh.

Ada named it Mister Cane the week she found it under the cold frames, back when the river still reached the bottom step. The seed ledger says only: skull, found with roots, nobody claims it.

Each spring the ivy pushes up through the drain grate and climbs the trellis of the old pumping hall, and each spring the rule holds: cut it back to the teeth and not one leaf further. The green on the skull came from a cutting Ada rooted in a jar of brackish water, a plant the valley folk won't touch, because its sap stains the fingers brown for a week. The ferry boy came up the towpath yesterday asking for seed to take across the water to his sister's roof garden. You told him the cupboard was empty, which is nearly true. Last night, sorting the ledger by lamplight, you found Ada's hand in the margin beside the skull entry: Water it from the top. Let the dead carry it down. You had read that line a dozen times and never once wondered what it meant.
At dawn you fill the chipped cup from the rain butt and tip it slowly into the skull's crown, watching the water find the cracks along the sutures. By noon a pale shoot has nosed out between two front teeth, and you leave it there, and you do not cut it back.
