Globe heart padlock sketch with cutlery and tag
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a heart made from a shaded globe with latitude and longitude lines and continent outlines. A padlock shackle sits at the top, with a keyhole on the front, a pin pushed into the left side, and a cupcake, spoon and fork hanging from thin wires. A tag with the script words alla procina hangs from the lower left, and the drawing uses soft grey shading on white paper.

Her brother Sol arrived on the Tuesday with a shoebox under one arm. Inside was a heart he had cut from a biscuit tin lid, its surface scratched with the lines of a globe, a hatpin pushed through one side for luck. Tucked under the tin was a card in their mother's looping hand: alla procina. "It means for the table," Sol said. "Or it means the place the table is." Dolores said their mother had never once been precise, and that was why the biscuit tins never ran out.
They spent the afternoon tracing the coastlines with their fingers, arguing over where the Danube began, and eating the cupcakes Sol had bought from the bakery on Newland Avenue, sugar falling on the oilcloth. A tiny spoon and fork hung from wire on the tin lid and clinked each time the back door opened.
When the light went, Dolores fitted the padlock back on the pantry door and left the key in the shoebox. "We'll leave it open," she said. "Nobody locks a table." The door swung on its hinge, and the lock hung there, open on nothing at all.
