Stitched heart sketch in pencil
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a heart cracked vertically down the centre and closed with a column of looped stitches. The linework is loose and sketchy, with soft grey shading along the left and right edges of the heart and small curled marks suggesting stitch ends. The design is shown in black and grey on a plain white background, with the heart filling most of the frame.

Mari had been sewing the Corbel banner for three days when the wind came through the broken north window and tugged the cloth off her knee. She caught it against the cold flags, swore at the draught in Welsh, and sat back on her heels to look at the crack.

It ran straight down the middle, a clean split where the old linen had worn thin along the fold. Someone long dead had stitched a heart over it, red on cream, and the years had pulled that heart in two along the same line. Mari had found a tin of thread in the chapel vestry, dull as ash, and she had been closing the seam one loop at a time, the way her grandmother closed a cut on a ewe.
Steward Pryce came up the spiral stair at dusk with a letter from Hereford. The estate was selling what could be carried, and the banner was going with the silver. "Leave the rot," he said, nodding at the hem. "Nobody buys a mend." Mari said nothing. She counted the loops she had left, fourteen, and when he had gone back down she pulled the thread taut and kept going.
By the time the bell in the village rang midnight, the split was closed from hem to shoulder, a column of looped stitches standing up the cloth like knots holding a door shut. She tied off the last one, bit the thread, and left the ends curling up off the linen where anyone could see how it had been put back together.
