Floral vine heart design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A heart outline is built from a single trailing stem with leaves, five-petal flowers and a spiral rose at the upper left. The linework is loose and sketch-like in black on white, with small dots scattered along the stem. The composition is centred and open, with the vine forming the full outline of the heart.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Edwin had been told twice by the prior that the wall along the infirmary garden was not a place for ornament. He went out anyway at first light with a ball of soft twine in his apron pocket and a knife he was not supposed to own, because the bramble had come through the lime mortar again and someone had to cut it back before the frost.

The stem he found was not bramble. It had grown from a root beneath the step where the novices sat to read, and it had climbed the wall in a single green line that bent, doubled back and bent again until it made a heart the width of a cart. Small white flowers with five points opened along it. Near the top left, something had coiled itself into a rose the size of a fist, its petals folded as if by a patient hand.

He did not cut it. He sat on the step with the twine uncoiled across his knees and began tying the loose shoots back to the iron pins, one by one, the way old Brother Gil had taught him to tie the peach trees in the south court. Every shoot he fastened seemed to settle into the shape the vine already wanted.

When the bell rang for Lauds the prior found him still there, hands green to the wrist. He looked at the heart for a long time and then said only that the infirmary would need its sunlight back by noon. Edwin nodded and went on tying. He had never known a garden to be so generous, nor so unwilling to be cut.
