Globe with banner and scrollwork on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a leg with a large black and grey tattoo on the thigh. The design shows a wireframe globe wrapped in a ribbon banner with the word WANDERLUST, framed by ornate scrollwork, acanthus-style leaves and a fish-like form below. The linework is bold and the shading is soft, set against a plain background with a black and white ornamental drawing on the wall to the left.

You are the only one in the palace of Ostrevane who has ever asked the sea what lies past its edge. The court cartographers laugh at you over their inks, and the Lord Chamberlain has a standing order that the great silver globe in the north hall is not to be turned by apprentices. You turn it anyway, each night after the bells, when the lamps are low and the carp in the moat-ponds have stopped their slow circling.

The globe has no sea of its own. Its meridians are drawn in wire, and through the wire you can see the hall's painted ceiling, which is why the old queen had it made hollow. Beneath the spheres, an old carp from the moat, scaled in gold and rust, rises through the acanthus leaves the masons carved into the plinth. Its tail curls into the scrollwork as if the ocean had grown tired and decided to become ornament. Every night it noses the globe, and the ribbon across it slides a finger's width further round.
One night the ribbon comes loose. The word on it unrolls across the flagstones, and the carp pushes it toward the door. You follow. Past the gate, past the salt marsh where the wardens sleep, past the last milestone the kingdom admits to, the road keeps going in a grey line you have never been allowed to walk.
At dawn the Chamberlain finds the hall empty except for a wet trail on the tiles and the globe turned to face the window, its wire sea full of light. Your ink-stained cloak hangs on its peg. Nobody in Ostrevane has tried to map the carp since, but the apprentices say that on clear mornings a fish with gold scales is seen rising in the far harbours, and that it always stops to let the sailors read the ribbon.
