The label said GOD'S GIFT in a loopy hand nobody on the night shift could place, and it had no postcode, no sender and no business being on the sorting belt at half past two on a Tuesday. Marion from the returns desk wanted it binned. Dennis picked it up instead, because it was heavier than a box that size had any right to be, and something inside it was humming.

He carried it onto the 14 bus with the parcel on his knees like a sleeping cat. Rain ran down the windows in grey ribbons. A woman two seats along asked if it was a birthday, and he said he honestly didn't know. When he finally peeled back the tissue at his kitchen table, there was no present inside at all, only a folded map of the harbour wall, a pencil ring drawn round the old lifeboat station, and a tin of pear drops from a shop that closed in 1994.

He ate one. It tasted exactly like his mother's coat pocket. He sat with the map until the kettle boiled dry, feeling a daft sort of hope, the kind you get when a door you've been shoving at turns out to have been unlocked all along.

At six he was back at the depot with the box under his arm. Marion raised an eyebrow. Dennis took the biro from behind her ear, ignored the strange loopy hand, and wrote his own name and address across the label in capitals, pressing hard enough to tear the paper.
