Names in a heart with love script on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A healed or near-healed tattoo on the forearm forms a heart from black serif-style names, including Sydney, Emily and Taylor, with a fourth name partly visible. The word love sits in the centre in red looping script, with thin red swirls and small red hearts extending from the outline. The lettering is crisp and evenly inked, and the photo is taken at an angle under warm indoor light against a plain background.

Maureen had the sign-in sheet on a clipboard at the hall door, a biro tied to it with string, and by half past seven the names had stopped being names and turned back into girls. Sydney Price came in first, her husband trailing behind and glancing at his phone as if it might rescue him. Emily Hart arrived hugging everyone within reach. Taylor Bright signed with a flourish, then hesitated over the box marked guest of, and left it blank.

Forty minutes later Sydney found Maureen beside the tea urn, holding a French exercise book in a plastic wallet. Maureen knew it at once. In the spring of 1998 she had confiscated it from the back row, and the three of them had written their names on the inside back cover in a ring around the word LOVE, looping and underlined, because Emily had insisted the heart needed a proper centre. A fourth name, Julia, had been squeezed into the lower curve, half hidden under the others, as though she had been added late.
Julia went to Perth the summer after and stopped writing, Sydney said. Nobody ever found out why. Maureen had kept the book in her desk drawer for over twenty years without deciding what it was for.
Sydney asked if she had a pen. Maureen handed over the red one she used for marking, and Sydney bent over the trestle table and drew a small red heart beside Julia's name, pressing it closed the way you would seal a letter you meant to post. Then she gave the book back and went to find the others. Maureen tucked it under her clipboard and, for the first time all evening, forgot to count the guests.
