Goddess portrait on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo covers the forearm, showing a serene female deity face with a tall ornate crown, a third eye on the forehead and a crescent nose ring. Beaded necklaces and a decorative pendant fall below the chin. The work uses smooth, detailed greyscale shading with fine linework, set against a dark background and a maroon fabric.

The lamp in the shrine had been out for eleven years, and Ijeoma climbed the service ladder of Halden Ring with the oil can knocked against her hip, counting rungs the way her grandmother had taught her to count prayers. Below her the habitat turned slowly through its dark, a wheel of sleeping decks and hydroponic drums. Above, at the hub, the goddess waited behind a cracked viewport that someone had painted over in gold, and that someone had clearly loved her.

Nobody on the ring still worshipped her by name. They had forgotten the stories the way the old scrip had forgotten its numbers. But the children still left salt on the sill, and the dock foremen still touched two fingers to their brows before they signed out a suit, and when the reclamation board wanted to strip the shrine for its alloy, the whole ring went quiet and refused.
She trimmed the wick with a fingernail. The painted face above the viewport was calm, its heavy crown rising into a mesh of old circuit-gold, the crescent ring at its nose catching the faint glow of Earthlight through the seam. Ijeoma had always thought that look was patience rather than peace, the look of something that had watched a great many empires build themselves a temple and then forget the way in.
The flame caught, small and blue, and the shrine filled with a warmth that was really just the heater coming back online. She sat on the cold deck with her back against the ladder and waited, the way you wait for a bell you know is about to ring. When the ring's lights brightened by a single notch, she laughed out loud, and somewhere far below a child laughed back.
