Seated Guanyin with sunburst on a forearm
Japanese · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A seated Guanyin figure with closed eyes, a topknot and a dot on the brow is shown in a serene pose, holding a lotus flower and wearing layered bead necklaces and wrist mala beads. Smooth shading and fine highlights model the robes, skin and folds of fabric, with soft gradients giving depth. Behind the figure, radiating sunburst rays and a pale disc with soft clouds frame the design against a near black background.

The rain had been falling for three days when Mei Lan heard the child calling from the far side of the larches. She took the lantern from its hook by the door, the one her grandmother had painted with a pale sun, and went up the path past the shrine where the stone woman sat with her eyes lowered and a lotus bud resting in her hand.

The boy was not hard to find once she stopped walking and listened. He was crouched beneath a fallen trunk, his sleeve torn, his cheeks streaked with mud. "The path went away," he said. "The trees kept moving." Mei Lan knelt in the wet needles and did not hurry him. She drew the wooden beads from her wrist one at a time, the way her mother had counted her prayers, and the boy's breathing slowed to match the clicking until he was watching her hands instead of the dark.
When he could stand she lifted him onto her hip and turned back down the hill. The lantern swung, and for a moment its light caught the carved rays above the shrine door, a fan of stone cut by a mason nobody in the village remembered, and she saw that the path had been there all along, running straight to the lamps of the houses. Halfway down, the boy asked whether the stone woman could hear him from so far away.
"She hears everyone," Mei Lan said. "Even the ones who have wandered off." At the gate she pressed the lotus bud into his palm and folded his fingers over it, and when she looked back up the slope, the rain had thinned to a mist and the shrine stood pale against the trees, its hand still open.
