Old Marjory kept the walled garden behind the almshouse on Tennant Lane, and every spring she told the blackbirds that the ash tree at the far wall would bloom before the frost left the ground. Nobody believed her except the girl who swept the paths for pennies, a quiet child called Ilse who had come up from the mill towns with one boot tied on with string.

One March morning the ash caught fire. There was no smoke. The branches simply turned the colour of a coal just before it breaks, and out of the crown rose a bird the size of a kite, gold at the throat and wing, with a tail that poured behind it like a river of rose petals running the wrong way. It circled the almshouse roof once and settled on the sundial with its head tipped back, as if listening for something far off.

Marjory did not run. She filled a tin cup at the water butt and set it on the bench. "You're late," she said. "The old ones always are."

The bird drank, then spoke in a voice like a struck glass. It had burned up in a city of brick chimneys three hundred years gone, it said, and had been flying ever since, looking for a garden that would let it land. Ilse asked why it had come here. The phoenix looked at the girl's string-tied boot and said nothing. It only lifted one wing so the gold feathers caught the light, and Ilse understood that a tail of pink fire needs somewhere soft to fall.

By dusk the ash was in leaf and the phoenix had gone, but the path beneath the tree glowed faintly rose-coloured where its feathers had dropped. Marjory kept the cup on the bench for a week. Nobody moved it.
