Gold and silver metallic temporary tattoos on a foot

Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A bare foot rests on a textured stone surface. Gold and silver bands with dot patterns wrap the ankle and lower leg, and a silver and gold floral design with curling stems sits on the top of the foot. A silver anklet with hanging bells rests at the ankle, and the metallic designs are the main focus of the frame.

The wind came over the Kara Pass before the mule train did, and it rattled the tin of foil on my bench so hard that the gold leaf lifted and drifted to the floor like pollen. I swept it up with my palm, the way my aunt taught me, because wasted gold is a debt that follows you down the mountain. Outside, the caravan bells were already ringing, and I knew the salt women would want their stamps done before the snow shut the road.

I kept my grandmother's wooden blocks wrapped in oilcloth. The flower was cut first, a bloom of six petals with a curl at every stem, then the dots, rows of them pressed with the blunt end of a nail. Silver foil went on the bands and gold on the stems, because gold catches the low sun and silver takes the cold light, and every traveller buys whichever her husband can afford to be seen buying.

Mirela, the salt trader's daughter, came in last that afternoon with a sketch on the back of a receipt. She did not want the old bloom. She wanted a stem that ran off the edge of the design and curled back on itself into a spiral that never closed. I told her the foil would tear. It did, twice, and she laughed each time and said leave it. So I pressed the broken spiral onto her with my grandmother's last good dab of gold, and she fastened her silver anklet over the top so the bells would sit against the mark.

She went down the track at dusk with the bells ringing ahead of her, and I stood in the doorway counting them until the wind took the sound and I could no longer tell the bells from the stones knocking together in the river below.
