Metallic gold and silver temporary tattoos on a foot

Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A bare foot rests on sand with a floral design in gold metallic ink across the top of the foot, featuring a round bloom, leaves and silver fronds. Metallic gold and silver stripes and dotted bands wrap the ankle, and a silver anklet with hanging charms sits alongside them. The warm, soft sunlight and close framing give the image a natural beach setting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Whitstable believed Ada Penhale when she said the gold came off the sea. She had raked the tideline for thirty summers, collecting what the water gave back: bottle glass, cuttlebone, the odd brass button from a coat that had gone down with its owner. The bells were different. They turned up on a Tuesday in August, tangled in a knot of bladderwrack near the groyne, a silver chain with seven little bells strung on it like a row of tiny lanterns.

She took them home and sat with them at the kitchen table. Her mother had worn anklets like that when she danced at the harvest fairs in Kent, and had said the bells were there so a girl could be heard before she was seen. Ada rubbed the chain with a cloth and the tarnish came away grey on her thumb.

The next morning she walked the sand before the tide turned and found the rest of it: a silver frond, a curl of gold leaf half buried, a single flower the size of a fingernail, as if someone had tipped a jeweller's tray onto the beach and walked off. She laid each piece in a row along the sea wall, and by noon the sun had dried them into something bright enough to hurt the eyes.

She never did learn whose they were. She sold the chain to a woman from the Quay who said she would wear it at her sister's wedding, and Ada kept the flower. Each evening she pressed it into the wet sand at the water's edge and waited to see whether the sea would take it back.
