Gold mandala on a calf at the beach

Geometric · Calf · Colour · Photo

A bare leg is shown from the calf down, with a large radial mandala in metallic gold and bronze tones on the calf. A smaller crown design in the same metallic finish sits on the other ankle, and several layered chain anklets are worn on both feet. The soft focus background shows blue sea, white surf and pale sand, with even daylight across the skin.

"That's ours," he said, and the men who had followed him down the cliff path nodded, because the mine had paid their wages for thirty years and the sea had paid nothing. Old Morwenna Pascoe, who kept the lamp at the harbour and had buried two husbands and a son in the chapel yard, watched from the wall with her shawl pulled tight. "The sea doesn't pay debts," she said. "It only lends."

He dug. They all dug, the length of the cove, and the sand came up in a ring of pale shells, then in a bronze spiral like the petals of a flower opening under water. Each coin they lifted was thinner than the last. By dusk the gold had turned to wet leaf that flaked between their fingers, and the mandala had washed back into the surf as the tide climbed over it.

Hosken went home with nothing but salt on his cuffs. Morwenna walked down at dawn and found a single disc caught in a crack of the slate, rubbed thin and bright as a fish scale. She left it there for the next child who came looking.
