Gothic cathedral on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed tattoo of a Gothic cathedral facade with two tall pointed spires, pointed arched windows and buttresses, drawn in thin black linework. Shading is light and mostly confined to the windows and recesses, with the stonework left as open skin. The cathedral is centred on a pale forearm against a plain light background, with a black and white striped sleeve at the left edge.

Orla found her father in the lantern room with his palm flat against the glass, as if he could feel the weather coming through it. The lamp was not lit yet. Below them the North Sea had turned the colour of slate and was working at the rocks of Scarrow Head with the patience of something that had all night.

The postcard was still in her coat pocket. Her mother had bought it in a station kiosk on the way home from a funeral in the south, and had told them that you could see the two spires from the train for a good hour before you got there, two grey needles pointing at the sky over the flat fields. Her father had never forgiven the thing for being so tall. Stone that high, he said, had no business being raised by men who could not swim, and he had kept the card propped against the tea caddy for eleven years without once looking at it.
She took it out and held it up to the window. The arches on the drawn front were so fine she could count them, row over row, each window a neat black lancet with its little stone shoulders. Someone had drawn every buttress by hand, patiently, as though nothing in the world would be finished unless it was done that way.
"They took six hundred years to finish that," she said.
"Then they were slow," her father said, but he took the card from her and turned it to the light. The lamp came on behind them with its low electric hum, and the beam swung out across the water, and for a moment the paper glowed white, the spires sharp as a pair of hands raised in prayer, or in warning.
