Castle in a snow globe with pink flower

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A castle with tall spires and arched windows sits inside a dark, star-speckled dome, set on a striped orange and grey base. A pink flower with a black centre and two dark green leaves sits to the left of the globe. The castle is shaded with fine stippled and hatched grey, while the flower, leaves and base use bold black outlines and flat colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The glassblower's daughter had been told three times to leave the furnace alone, and she was still standing at the bench with the cooling rod in her hand when the Queen's steward came up the hill road in the rain. He wanted a globe. Not a bowl, not a lamp. A globe with the castle of Wenmoor inside it, the towers exactly as they stood, and a night sky above them so the Queen could shake it and watch the snow fall on her own roof.

Mara said she could make the glass but not the snow. The steward said the Queen had never been told no in her life and did not intend to start with a glassmaker's girl. So Mara worked through the winter. She pinched the spires from clear glass and hatched the walls with a steel point, grey on grey, one fine line after another, until the castle looked as though it had been breathed onto a window. For the sky she drilled a thousand pinholes and filled them with powdered star-metal from the mines at Hollin.

On the night she sealed the base, a pink poppy came up through the cracks in the flagstones outside the workshop, the first of the year and far too early. Her father said it was a sign. Mara said it was a weed. She picked it anyway and pressed it under the dome, where it floated against the east tower like a watchful eye.

When the Queen lifted the globe, the snow stayed still and the poppy turned to face her. The steward swore afterward that the castle had shrunk to fit inside the glass. Mara never said whether it had. She only asked for her wages in gold, and when they came, she bought a furnace of her own.
