Graffiti-style alphabet lettering sheet

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A sheet of paper showing the letters A to Z drawn in a blocky, bubble-style graffiti lettering. Each letter has a thick white fill, a dark black outline and grey shadowing that gives it depth. The letters are arranged in rows filling the page, with a teal backdrop visible behind the sheet.

By the third week Tomasz had stopped asking Ruth whether his Ns were all right. She just sat on the upturned crate by the lock gates, tea going cold beside her, and tapped the paper wherever the outline wobbled. Each letter had to be fat enough to hold a white fill and dark enough at the edges to look like it had weight. He had drawn all twenty-six in biro, then in marker, then in the grey paint he had nicked from the council depot, and the sheet was starting to curl at the corners from the damp off the canal.

The trouble was the shadows. Ruth made him redo the M four times because its shadow dropped down and to the right like a coat sliding off a chair, while the rest of the alphabet leaned the other way. 'Pick a light,' she said. 'Then everything answers to it.' He asked where the light came from. She pointed across the water at the gasworks chimney, where the sun went down every evening behind the hoardings and threw the whole towpath into long slabs of blue.

He worked until the lamps came on, filling the bubble of the A, the swell of the B, the hard stacked corners of the Z. By midnight the page looked like a crowd of white stones on a wall. Ruth rolled it into a cardboard tube and said a man on Kirkgate wanted his shop name done in exactly this style, for the glass of his door. It would be the first thing anyone saw in the morning.

Two weeks later Tomasz walked past the shop and found his alphabet broken up and rebuilt into the name, every shadow falling left, the way the light fell at the lock, the only direction Ruth had ever let him draw.
