Polynesian-style spiral tattoo design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a tribal design built from large spiral and curling forms outlined in white against a dark, hatched background. The inner areas are filled with triangular motifs, chevrons, dots and fine parallel shading that give depth and rhythm. The design is shown in greyscale on a plain white ground, with the shapes arranged to fill a tall, sleeve-like panel.

The adze had gone blunt by the time the light slanted through the boat-shed door, and Tanu still would not let Mere touch the king's prow. "Not yet," he said, rubbing the pale wood with his thumb as if he could feel the grain through the callus. "A spiral is not drawn. It is grown, from the centre outwards, and you must know where it ends before you begin."

She had watched him cut the same curl for eleven winters. Each one started as a tight fist of lines near the heart of the wood and unwound through chevrons and small dots, the triangles nested inside each other like the teeth of a shark's jaw, until the outer scroll swept clear of the board and seemed to be leaving the canoe altogether. Tanu said the trick was to leave the white ground between the cuts as wide as the dark, so the carving could breathe.
On the night before the launch, the king's men came to measure the prow. Mere took a lump of charcoal from the hearth and, on the back of the old man's pattern-board, drew the spiral the way he had taught her, starting at the centre. Her hand shook at the third turn. She kept going, filling the hatched shadows with fine parallel strokes, and when she reached the edge of the paper she found the curl had closed on itself, one line running back into the first.
Tanu looked at it a long time in the lamplight. Then he took the charcoal from her, added a single dot in the middle of the outermost scroll, and said nothing about it at all. In the morning the canoe went down the beach with her mark on its underside, where only the water would see.
